Information On Becoming A Vegetarian

As a prospective vegetarian, you probably question whether or not it really matters if you stop eating meat. It is surprising how many people are willing to do this but cannot grasp just how important even one person who changes is in the overall picture. With sufficient people changing their eating habits, it will make a huge difference for huge numbers of animals that would have otherwise died. Health is one issue which you cannot escape from as it is the consumption of meat that is the number one cause of heart disease in the United States.

Meat, dairy produce and eggs are the main sources of cholesterol which are the contributing factors in coronary heart disease and other circulation problems. According to Earth Save, the average vegetarian has about a quarter of a chance of having a heart attack as the average person. For those who go one step further and become vegans the figure lowers even still to an amazing one in ten chance. But these are not the only health benefits of choosing to be a vegetarian.

Meat contains a number of preservatives which have links with cancer, something which is dramatically reduced when you do not eat meat. Hormones used in animal feed are obviously not present either in vegetarian meals, which have proved to create hormone problems in people. And you won’t consume as much lactose, which most people cannot digest properly and which some dietitians have suggested is a cause of digestive problems. The health advantages to becoming a vegetarian are unquestionable but there is also the fact that many animals will not lose their lives to feed you either.

The organization Vegan Out-Reach claims that the number of animals killed to feed the average American citizen during their life is in excess of two thousand seven hundred. It is a sobering thought that a change in diet could literally save hundreds of animals from being slaughtered over the course of a decade alone. Continuing along this line and by giving up eggs and milk, many hens and cows will be saved from the degradation of just being alive to feed us. It is difficult to ignore the impact that eating meat has on the planet and makes the case for becoming a vegetarian stronger. It is hard to ignore the facts and the number of animal lives that would be saved is huge, not to mention the reduction in your chances of contracting a heart condition or cancer.
